Hailing from Melbourne, Australia,
indiepop kids Summer Cats released one
of our favourite albums of last year, "Songs
For Tuesdays" on the ever excellent Slumberlands
Records (home of The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, Crystal
Stilts, The Lodger.) So we're chuffed to bits that Summer
Cats have given us "Paperweight"
to offer as our latest virtual vinyl. And on top of that
we've also got an exclusive remix of Paperweight by The
Emergency!
Reviews of "Songs For Tuesdays"
"It’s a torrent of smart and sassy indiepop,
albeit pop lined with sharp teeth, starting and finishing
in grunge style with a squall of guitars in overdrive
and flourish of relentlessly pumped keyboards. They’ve
got Apples in Stereo’s sense of melody and the metronymic
rhythms of Stereolab, not to mention outrageous humour...
The underlying tone, though, is of summer-fresh pop music.
Why it bears the title of “Songs for Tuesday”
I don’t know, because the pop swagger of this album
should make this a daily pleasure"
SoundsXP
"This is pure, catchy indie pop, – jangly,
sometimes noisy and always full of charm, humor and great
melodies."
Eardrums Blog
"It’s difficult to pinpoint a favorite, as
you’ve got a number of fantastic songs to choose
from, whether it be the newly recorded versions of past
singles like “Wild Rice” and “Lonely
Planet” to new faves like “Maybe Pile”
and “In June”. All of which showcase the many
different vocalists that join frontman Scott Stevens,
who is easily one of the best vocalists in indiepop right
now." The Yellow Stereo
"Songs for Tuesdays is a punchy, perky mix of amped-up
melodics that recalls the Go-Betweens if it was recorded
by Lenny Kaye for the original Nuggets compilation. While
the Pains of Being Pure at Heart seems to have monopolized
much of Slumberland’s recent focus, Summer Cats’
kinetic debut is an overlooked addition to the label’s
roster that deserves far more attention than it has received." Popmatters
"It's just a freaking great POP record... all killer
no filler... it swaggers, shimmies and it moves your hips
and makes your heart soar and sometimes sore and I want
to be surrounded by people who dig it too and we can all
dance to it and whoop and holler; because it's a party
record... because this is a POP band and they write tunes
they clearly want to play and enjoy and enjoy playing
to people and presumably they'll get off on that... the
fun and the happiness they bring. And isn't that enough?" A Fog Of Ideas
After the surprisingly speedy
sell-out of their recent "Basic Pleasure Unit"
EP, we though it best to offer up some free Katsen love
for those that missed out! So here for your listening
pleasure is their utterly fantastic pop song "Where
Nobody Can Find Us", which has proven to be one of
the firm favourites from their album "It Hertz".
Also, there's an exclusive remix of "Florian"
by Thee SPC's very own Darren Chuck, which puts an etherial
spin on the original. Check out the cool video for "Where
Nobody Can Find Us" below, too:

Cats For Peru- "Asleep In
Monaco" c/w "The Bearded One"
Thee SPC and Phantom
Power Records are very proud to jointly release
the debut album from Cats For Peru "Attack
Of The Pitching Machine"
Comparisons to bands such as Arcade Fire and Elbow
are inevitable, but welcome. Like those bands, Cats
For Peru create songs full of emotional tension
and melodic punch: The single "Asleep In Monaco"
is quite simply a gorgeously simmering pop song.
Cats For Peru are named after an odd tale from
Parkgate, Northern Ireland where rumour spread of
a strange and elusive South American catching cats
to take back to his native Peru. Cats For Peru are
out to catch things too: Your hearts. Cats For Peru MySpace
Our latest free virtual
vinyl is taken from the debut album "It Hertz"
by eletronic pop duo Katsen.
"Let's Build A City" is a frenetic gallop
through electronic sounscapes and pop hooks, with
Donna and Chris sharing the urgent vocals. "Cactus"
is a very splendid cover of the Pixies song from
the Surfa Rosa album.
Katsen are the electronic pop duo of Chris Blackburn
& Donna Grimaldi. Donna and Chris became friends
in 2001 while selling clothes at a craft market
in Brighton.
Chris: "We'd get together to listen to records
and, after exhausting Donna's extensive and very
cool collection, we'd get out my synths and toy
keyboards and create our own sound long into the
happy night."
This free virtual vinyl
is taken from the debut album "Leap Into My
Fervent Arms" by ace Sheffield 5-piece Screaming
Mimi, courtesy of our friends at Phantom Power Records.
Screaming Mimi say:
"There were times we thought it'd never happen.
There were times Denzil Phantom Power thought it
would never happen. But it's here. And it's ace.
Tremble before the radiant beauty of our new 13-track
LP, "Leap Into My Fervent Arms". It contains
all the singles, the full (and quite frankly epic)
version of "Electric Thighs", the previously
compilation-only "DirtyPillowSlip" and
a bevy of un-released tracks. Phew." Screaming Mimi MySpace

The
Interiors- "My Little Pony" c/w "Without Style"
This
ace free virtual vinyl is
taken from the debut album "Delays
Are Dangerous" by The Interiors,
courtesy of our friends at Phantom Power
Records - an excellent independent Sheffield
label!
Say hello then to Sheffield's punk-pop
outsiders The Interiors. A four-piece fronted by
three with vocal duties split equally between Bob,
Sharleen and Adam, while John keeps everything tight
on the drums.
Their debut album, recorded with
Sheffield legend Alan Smyth at 2Fly studios, features
16 urgent sub-three minute slices of in-yer-face
punk pop. Comparisons with the likes of The Pixies
and The Ramones would sit heavily on the shoulders
of many bands. Not so with the direct and untamed
energy of The Interiors.

Slow Down Tallahassee - "The
Beautiful Light" c/w "Limbs"
This
free virtual vinyl is taken from the debut album
"The Beautiful Light"
by Slow Down Tallahassee. The album
is a gloriously shining beacon of indie pop. As
Slow Down Tallahassee put it themselves:
“We started the band because
we wanted to write songs with warmth and passion.
Songs that people could dance to and fall in love
with, combining truth with fantasy, exploring the
shadows between innocence and corruption. But, above
all, our goal has been to make a great pop record.”
And that they have done. Taking
guidance from their love of 50s twang, 60s pop and
80s indie, Slow Down Tallahassee have created a
world of their very own. Join their gang and you’ll
never be lonely again.
Fantastic
Free 'virtual box set' from Stoke indiepoppers Horowitz.
The pack includes three excellent songs, a high
quality video for "I Need a blanket" and a virtual
fanzine, postcard and badge set!
Two of the three songs are taken
from Horowitz's debut album "Frosty
Cat Songs", of which we said: "There's
a depth to the songwriting that shines over & above
their influences (which probably include the likes
of Pavement, Velvet Crush, Razorcuts, Hefner, Sonic
Youth, Belle & Sebastian, The Aisler Set and so
on.) It's a smashing album that I urge you to check
out".

Monkey
Swallows The Universe - "Sheffield Shanty" & "Jimmy Down
The Well"
Monkey
Swallows The Universe are a fantastic acoustic five
piece who write beguiling songs about love, jealousy,
apathy, imaginary friends and pirates! We have taken
two splendid songs from the Monkey Swallows
The Universe album "The Bright
Carvings".
Florence
is the additional track that featured on the CD
version of the Monkey Swallows The Universe
single 'Science' but not on the
7" vinyl version. Download it here for free!
Following
on from their critically acclaimed single on Thee
SPC, Champion Kickboxer release
their debut album "Perforations"
and we have taken two plum tracks from it for your
delectation and delight.
Smokers
Die Younger simply
defy categorisation in the cosy, post-modern "if
you like this, you'll like this" journalistic climate
of the modern era. We have taken "I Spy Dry Fear"
from their brilliant debut album "X Wants
The Meat" as a free taste of SDY.
Virginian
chicken farmer, Charles Cullen, is a genuine DIY
phenomenon. He writes music, makes movies, presents
TV shows and is a puppeteer. His songs are like
Neil Young meets The Moldy Peaches doing the soundtrack
to a John Waters film. We have taken three splendid
songs from the Charles E Cullen
album "Welcome To The World Of Charles E
Cullen".
