Thee SPC Say

Meat for a Dark Day are a Sheffield rock and roll band, featuring ex-Fat Truckers vocalist Mark Hudson. Their debut single for Thee SPC illustrates perfectly the two different sides of the band: from the beautiful mournful kitchen sink tale “Three Mallards” to the unreconstructed garage swagger of “Vanity Unfair”. The band’s musical influences are wide and far from predictable, but they certainly share something in common with artists whose names are often mentioned by reviewers; Smog, Nick Cave, The Fall, early Ten Benson, Arab Strap, Jesus and Mary Chain, Tom Waits. Meat For A Dark Day produced this single with Ross Orton (MIA, Fat Truckers, Jarvis Cocker) & Dean Honer (All Seeing Eye, I Monster, Add N to (X).)

A Selection of Reviews

"Vanity Unfair’ mixes extremely explicit-sounding guitar lines with gleefully punk vocals and very dumb-sounding beats to make an idiot-punk/black leather-rock song with a gratifyingly instant appeal. It’s a puffed-up blaggard of a song: preposterous, simplistic and quite magnificent fun. And on the b-side ‘Three Mallards’, a gentle acoustic lost-love ballad with echoey vocals and plenty of soul, proves that MFADD don’t need to pander to the instant gratification Ramones-rock camp – they just wanted to. And why the fuck not, indeed? More soon, please..." Drowned In Sound

"Vanity Unfair by Sheffield's Meat For A Dark Day is like an update to Blur's Parklife punctured with the quirkiness of XTC played in a garage venue. It's a short, rocky and anthem like affair packing a mighty punch despite clocking in under two minutes." Indie MP3

"Literate garage rock on debut single from Meat for a Dark Day, the new band of former Fat Trucker vocalist Mark Hudson." Penny Black

""Vanity Unfair" is a thumping slab of prime garage boogie with a nice line in caustic observation." Notes From A Defeatist
