Thee SPC Say
This is a great album from Stoke DIY-indie-poppers Horowitz. It skips between lofi-noise, jangly guitar workouts, acoustic slowies and slacker anthems. The range of songs has such a width of influence, that I reckon Horowitz must be a bunch of underground-indie obsessives, which is clearly a GOOD THING. Not that they are just copyists, no-no. There's a depth to the songwriting that shines over & above their influences (which probably include the likes of Pavement, Velvet Crush, Razorcuts, Hefner, Sonic Youth, Belle & Sebastian, The Aisler Set and so on.) It's a smashing album that I urge you to check out.
A Selection of Reviews
"A delectable riot of home-cooked pop action that runs the gamut between spirited RAZORCUTS infected guitar jangle, the lo-fi noise/pop heart of PAVEMENT and mid period GUIDED BY VOICES. Hints of BELLE AND SEBASTIAN and HEFNER can also be heard in the likes of the super-pretty "It's Better To Eat Twinkies With Your Friends" and "Veronica Made A Tape" which marry endearing, impressionistic lyrics with delicately picked primary-coloured acoustic chords and bubbling toy organ sounds. This album will have you dancing around your bedroom and sighing winsomely in equal measure. A sweet melodic breath of fresh air. " Rough Trade
"Wow. This is fun. This is fun. Remember fun? This is lo-fi indiepop with fuzzy guitars and hummable tunes. This is the sound that gets me excited. It's style, as such, is best endeavours. No sparkling musicianship here (hurray!). Just some nice songs recorded at home in that lovable lo-fi way." Lost In Music
"Although sharp and jagged, there is a cutening of the pointy tips of ‘S*I*S*T*E*R’s scuzzy canter as we launch straight into this long-player. ‘Chilwell Olympia’ breaks out of the static to showcase an effusive hippie-hair jangle. Even through their lo-fi shambling, such as where ‘Season of the Witch’ packs the vocals beneath sharp, fuzzy guitar continuity, great tunes will out and this grips like a child might onto the string of their first balloon. Imagine a few seconds prior to that image, and said child shyly hiding behind the hem of their mother’s skirt from the balloon-proferring tall gentleman they’re beginning to suspect may be their father returned from a long military campaign. Well, often this LP has all that meekness, all that guilelessness, but in that, and in their chirp and cheek, and that’s not to say that tunes like ‘Veronica Made A Tape’ don’t have a mature emotional weight or songs like ‘Punk Kids’ don’t bristle with contrarian noise, Horowitz are utterly enrapturing. "Ah, I love a good lo-fi indie rock record, and I also love softer indiepop - but it's so rare to find the two genres combined, as they are on the debut album from this British group." Indiepages
